Favorite Record Type

#Saturday Night Genealogy Fun

It’s Saturday Night –

time for more Genealogy Fun!

Your mission, should you decide to accept it (cue the Mission Impossible music here) is to:1) What is your favorite record type or resource?  Not a website, but a type of record – e.g., census, cemetery, land, etc.  Why?

Land Records

While I use a wide variety of genealogy records in my research, by far my favorite resource is a deed. This may be because my ancestors were farmers and often land owners. Some might question my love for these records thinking that they only place an individual in a place on a specific date. Fortunately, for me, land records have helped document

  • arrival date in a new location.
  • the location a person was from when different from location of the deed or when moving from one place to another.
  • relationships.

For example, the Madison County Kentucky deed for the sale of land in 1798 identifies the children of John Anderson.

Since FamilySearch has filmed a lot of land records across the United States and then digitized that microfilm, accessing these records are easier to access now than when I first started my genealogy journey. I am very grateful for this access.

I agree with your choice of land records. It’s one of my favorites, too. Hard to narrow down a choice, isn’t it?
