Do you ever come across a simple sentence in a county history that changes your previous theories about a family? Well that happened to me when I was researching the family of James and Mary (Crawford) Sellers.
For years, I’ve thought that the SELLERS family was in Pennsylvania before migrating to Kentucky and then to Ohio and Indiana. Perhaps that thought was based on the fact that Nathan Sellers (1753-1824) was thought to have served during the revolutionary war for Pennsylvania.
In my old research notes is a history of the John Crawford Sellers family that I must have overlooked the sentence stating the family migrated to Kentucky from Virginia.

In trying to find sources to support this statement, I elected to look at tax records to see what they would reveal about the Seller family. Based on previous research of these records, I had already found the following for the family of Nathaniel Sellers:
- Nathaniel Sellers (1720-1795) — Listed on 1787 tax in Lincoln County Kentucky
- Joseph Sellers – listed on 1789 tax in Lincoln County — moving to Bourbons County KY by 1792
- Samuel Sellers – listed on 1792 tax in Lincoln County KY
- John Sellers — listed on 1783 tax in Lincoln County KY
- Nathan A. Sellers – listed on 1787 tax in Lincoln County KY and then on 1788 tax in Bourbon County KY
- James Sellers – listed on 1789 tax in Lincoln County KY
- William David Sellers — listed on 1792 tax in Lincoln County KY
Knowing that I had the family on these tax records, I wondered whether I could locate them on earlier tax records. In my search for potential tax records, I came across the book, Virginia Tax Payers 1782-1787 by Augusta B. Fothergill and John Mark Naugle. Looking thru this book, I decided to extract data for my CRAWFORD fan club in these Virginia tax records.
