Come on, everybody, join in and accept the mission and execute it with precision. Here’s your chance to sit on Genea-Santa’s lap (virtually) and tell him your Christmas genealogy-oriented wish list:
1) What Christmas-time weather have you experienced? Does it snow at Christmas-time where you live? What are the likely temperatures at Christmas time??
Wow, Genea-Santa expects one to predict Christmas weather in KANSAS! That’s a hard task that even the meteorologists struggle with — especially two weeks in advance.
We have not been having ‘typical’ winter weather. We have been warmer than usual and dry. So what does that indicate about Christmas. Typically December is cold but a ‘white’ Christmas is not normal. However, there have been some historic winter storms in December. Since the Sabetha newpapers are online, it was possible to search the papers for ‘ice storm’ or ‘blizzard’.
We were hosting my family’s Christmas celebration in 2009. My niece drove to Seneca from Onaga with the snow piled along the highway above her car. However, the ice storm of 2007 is the Christmas storm that most people recall. This storm took out electricity all across northeast Kansas. While power was back on at our house by evening, it took several weeks for the rural areas to get their power back. Christmas lights did not bring joy that year. Instead they highlighted the haves when it came to electrical power.
So, what does the long range forecase predict for this Christmas?
- Farmers Almanac – snowy periods; mild then bitter cold
- Weather25 – 14 Day forecast — colder but no winter storms
- AccuWeather – Kansas City – colder but no winter storms
SInce we are two weeks away from Christmas, it is impossible to truly predict what our weather will be. Based on our current weather, I would guess that AccuWeather and Weather25 are closer to predicting our Christmas weather.
