John Crawford, son of William and Rachel Sawyers Crawford, born in Augusta County, Va. 27 March 1775; died 17 September 1847 and buried in Buchanan Cemetery, Fayetteville, Tenn. He married (1) in Davidson County, Tenn, 6 Aug 1798 (probably bond), Margaret (Peggy) Buchanan, daughter of Andrew and Joanna Hays Buchanan, born 3 December 1777 and died 14 March 1816. John married (2) 10 October 1816, Elizabeth Norris, born 9 Jun 1788 and died 1856.

The following abstracted copy of will of John Crawford is from a copy in possession of Dr. T. E. Halbert, Lebanon, Tenn., R.F.D. 2, a great-grandson, and found in Tennessee Bible Records — Tombstone Inscriptions by Jeanette Tillatson Acklen, 1933. It is filed in Lincoln County, Tenn.

John Crawford, of County of Lincoln, State of Tennessee.
His farm and all that pertains to it, his dwelling and in general all his property to wife Elizabeth, sons, John and Ezekial, to have three hundred and two acres land on north side of farm and one hundred and forty acres woodland north side of hilly tract purchased of McConnell estate. Remaining lands, negroes and other property to be divided, sold, as to make each equal share after accounting for advancements. John and Ezekiel, after having each one-third of landed property, to have no more.

Some of older children in Arkansas and some in Tennessee have had sums as follows: Hay (or his heirs, $809; Wm. D., $927; James $434.75; Naomi, $367; Eleanor, $403; Rachel, $228; Nancy, $228; Andrew A., $317.50; Mary, $270; Margaret,

$162; Elizabeth, $192; which amounts are charged to them on his book of accounts.

If any other children found to have received more than an equitable share shall note be required to refund, John and Ezekiel, after death of wife, two-thirds of lands only.

Proceeds of estate after death of wife equally divided among his following named children: Hay’s heirs, William D., James, Naomi, Eleanor, Nancy, Andrew A., Mary, Margaret Elizabeth, Emily, Martha Lucinda and Rachel.

Executors: Alexander McDonald of Fayetteville, William F. Kerchenal, Esq. of Fayetteville, and his son John Crawford.

Elizabeth Crawford. Pleasant Holbert & wife Nancy, John M. Buchanan and wife, Elizabeth, Ezekiel N. Crawford and John Crawford and Emily Crawford, all of age and residents of this county and William Crawford, James Crawford, Isaac Buchanan and wife Naomi, John Buchanan and wife Elanor, Andrew E. Crawford T. Stephenson and wife Margaret all of age and live in the state of “Arkansaw”, James A Crawford and wife Rachel, John Clayton and wife Polly, all of age and reside in state of Texas. John Crawford, late of Lincoln County, Tenn. died in 1847 leaving as heirs your complainant (Elizabeth Crawford) and Martha L. Crawford, a minor of Lincoln County, and the children of Hezekiah Crawford, who died in the state of Arkansas in 1848, the number and names of his children not remembered except one, Andrew Crawford, his only heirs and devisees at law Said John Crawford left a will dated 10 January 1846, naming wife Elizabeth and two sons John and Ezekiel.

Said Elizabeth is now getting old. Said son John has long since married and lives and farms by himself; said son Ezekiel has also married and wishes to remove to the state of Texas. A large number of her children have removed to the states of Arkansas and Texas and several more expect to go and she wishes to go with them. Petition to sell property. (Note: we question 1848 as being date of death of Hezekiah, whom we place as Hays. John Crawford’s will refers to heirs of son Hays in 1846.

11351 – Hays (Hezekiah) Crawford, born 5 January or June 1799; died 14 September 1838, Washington County, Ark.; married 1821 in Tennessee to Susan Harris and had eight children (see later)

11352 – William D. Crawford, born 22 March 1801 in Tennessee; died 1882; buried Prairie Grove Cemetery, Ark. He married Elizabeth Sawyers (or Savage), born 1798 in Virginia; died 1884, Washington County, Ark. We have no record of their children, if any.

11353 James Crawford, born 25 January 1803; died 3 June 1880, Washington County, Ark. and married Louisa Buchanan. (See later)

11354 Naomi Crawford, born 19 April 1805; died 17 June 1888; married 13 September 1827 (marriage license), newspaper account gives date 6 October 1827, Isaac Buchanan. (See later)

11355 Rachel Sawyers Crawford, born 13 December 1806; died 10 August 1879; married 1827 her cousin James A. Crawford, son of Alexander Crawford and Rachel Lesley. They had ten children. See #11314 under William Crawford line for their children.

11356 Eleanor (Ellen) Crawford, born 2 October 1808; died 25 August 1898; married John Buchanan and moved to Arkansas (see laters0

11357 Nancy Crawford, born 16 November 1810; married Pleasant Halbert and lived in Tennessee in 1850 (See later)

11358 Andrew Alexander Crawford, born 11 November 1812; died in the Civil War; married (1) Minerva Buchanan; married (2) Rachel Tinnon (See later)

11359 Joanna Crawford, born 12 October 1814, Lincoln County, Tenn.; died 19 October 1828. She is buried in Crawford Cemetery, Fayetteville, Tenn.

11350 Mary (Polly) Crawford, born 19 July 1817; married John Clayton and living in Texas in 1850. (Ref. to Chancery Petition.)

1135a John Crawford, born 21 November 1818; died 1856, Lincoln County, Tenn. and buried in Crawford Cemetery, Fayetteville, Tenn. He is recorded on 1850 census for Lincoln County, age 30 yr. with wife Sarah, age 23, daughter Adella, age 2 and son John, age 1. In Lincoln County marriages there is record of the marriage of a John Crawford to Sarah Blake, 6 August 1846. The chancery court petition shows John as married in January 1850. 1135c – Margaret Crawford, born 8 February 1822; married Dr. T. W. Stevenson, 11 April 1844. She died 4 February 1853 and buried in Crawford Cemetery in Fayetteville, Tenn. The chancery petition shows her husband as living in Arkansas in 1850.

1135d – Ezekial Norris Crawford, born 22 December 1823 or 24. According to chancery petition from children of John Crawford 26 January 1850, he had married and planed to move to Texas. He may be the E. N. Crawford who married Mary J. McElroy, 17 January 1850 in Lincoln County. He does not appear on the 1850 census for Lincoln county. According to Nanetta Parker’s research he is listed on the 1880 census for Lincoln County with a wife Elizabeth and four children. Lincoln county marriages show E. N. Crawford marrying Elizabeth Smith, 17 April 1867, marriage performed by rev. Tigert. We have no record of his children. (See additions)
