Today’s find comes from a letter written to the Recorder of Deeds for Platte County, Missouri in 1998 when copies of deeds for Matthew M. Bland were requested. Below is the transcription of the deed from Book C page 389.

This indenture made and entered into this thirtieth day of September
in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty five between Henry
Burkholder and Jane Burkholder his wife of the County of Platte and State of Missouri
of the one part and Martin Bland of the county and state aforesaid of the other
part witnesseth that the said Henry Burkholder and Jane his wife for and
in consideration of the sum of one hundred dollars to them in hand paid the
receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged do hereby grant bargain sell convey and con
firm unto the said Martin Bland his heirs and assigns forever all that tract
or parcel of land described to with It being a part of the East half of the South
west quarter of section no thirty four in township fifty four of Range thirty
six bounded as follows viz: Beginning at the north east corner of
said quarter section running due west twenty poles thence due south six
poles thence due east to the eastern line of said quarter section.
Thence due north to the place of beginning. It being the land on which
M Blands said mill stands containing one acre more or less It being
and laying in the County of Platte and State of Missouri Together with all
and singular the appurtenances thereunto belonging or in anywise appertaining
to have and to hold the above described premises unto the said Martin Bland
his heirs and assigns forever. And the said Henry Burkholder and Jane his
wife the aforesaid premises unto the said Martin Bland his heirs and assigns
against the claim or claims of all and every person whomsoever do and will
warrant and forever defend by these presents In witness whereof
the said Henry Burkholder and Jane his wife party of the first part have
hereunto set their hand and seals the day and year above written.

State of Missouri county of Platte
Be it remembered that on the 30th day of September in the year
of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty five personally appeared before me
William [Tamer] a Justice of the Peace within and for the County of Platte in the State
of Missouri Henry Burkholder and Jane his wife who are personally known to me
to be the persons whose names are subscribed to the foregoing and [written] deed
as having executed the same a a arty thereto and personally acknowledged
the same to be their act and deed for the purposes therein men
tioned She the said Jane Burkholder being by me first made acquainted
with the contents of the said instrument of writing and examined separate
and apart form her husband, whether she executed the said instru
ment of writing freely, willingly and without compulsion or under
influence from her husband, she acknowledged and declares that she
executed the said deed relinquishing her dower right in the said
land, and [?] freely, willingly , without compulsion or under
influence of her said husband.
