Do you ever research a family line that you are NOT related to? Well, I often do. Sometimes I research members of a FAN club so that I can learn more about my family in a specific time and place. At other times, they share time place and a surname.
Some may refer to this type of research as creating ‘Quick and Dirty Trees’.

- How Accurate Is a Quick and Dirty Tree? (Genea-Musings)
While I tend to build out my tree, I’ve never thought of it as ‘quick and dirty’. That is primarily because I tend to document that branch of my tree as I research it. Thus, it isn’t quick. Nor, would I consider it ‘dirty’. While documented, I have not tried to find every possible record for an individual or family in that branch of my tree. Thus it isn’t up to the Genealogical Proof Standards.
My current research project is one of those branches. I am researching the descendants of Alexander Crawford and his wife Margaret McElwee. Alexander and Margaret were married in 1788 in Lincoln County, Kentucky. While Lincoln county covered a large portion of Kentucky at that time, I’m hoping that Alexander lived near and is related to one of the James Crawford families found in the area at that time. With a yDNA test in progress to a probable descendant of Alexander, I’m trying to build out Alexander’s tree to locate other potential cousins to test.
That resarch led me to John Carroll Crawford Jr, probable son of John Crawford and Elizabeth Adams and thus a grandson of Alexander. John Carroll Crawford migrated from Kentucky to Bexar county Texas sometime after the Battle of the Alamo and before 1849. In December 1849, John C. Crawford was married to Maria Josefa De La Garza in Bexar county, Texas.
Maria gave birth to eleven children before her death in 1871. My post, Wife’s Will, is about Maria’s will where she left property to her husband and children. At the time of her death, her oldest child would have been 21 while her youngest child would have been Maria Guadalupe Crawford who was christened on 12 April 1871 a few weeks after Maria’s death.
And of course one of my readers would pick up on the fact that I haven’t researched every aspect of Maria’s life and death. Randy Seaver of Genea-Musings posted the following comment.

I can answer two of his questions. No, John C. Crawford did not remarry. In terms of the chldren, one son, John Carroll Garza Crawford would have turned 21 in 1871 while the remaining children would have been minors. However, I have not searched for an inventory or distribution. I likely won’t dig into the county court records to locate information regarding the property, inventory and/or distribution since this is my version of ‘quick and dirty’ research.
