Pension Record

Have you ever struggled to prove a family unit found on the FamilySearch tree. I’ve had that struggle for the past few weeks as I try to document a yDNA lineage that supposedly goes thru Lt. Jones A. Crawford.

One of the sources on the FamilySearch profile was a link to his military service record showin he served in the 14th Kentucky Cavalry.

Since locating sources to document the life of Lt. Jones Crawford was proving difficult, I decided to see whether a pension record existed for him. Thus, I contacted Brad Quinlan, a researcher who had obtained other civil war related documents for me. Brad was able to pull a ‘potential’ file that was filed under the name James A. Crawford. However, when the documents in the file were studied, it was obvious this file was for

Jones A. Crawfordt Lt G 14 Ky Cav

Even though the military service information matched, the name of the wife did not match the expected wife. Instead, the file was for Adline Crawford. After transcribing the file, I am convinced that Adline Crawford was the third wife of Jones A Crawford. My conclusion is based on the following information contained in the pension file.

declares that she is the widow of Jones A Crawford, who enlisted under the
name of Jones A Crawford of [ceynelson] KY on the 24 day of
Mar AD 1864 in Comp G the 14 Reg Ky Calv on the the
16 day of Aug 1862
and served at least ninety days in the late War of the Rebellion, who was honorably discharged at Camp Nelson
Ky and died on the 20 of April 1891. That she was married under the
name of Adline Biggs, to said deceased, on the 2 day of Feb
day of 1878 Esq Moor at Protem
State of Mo, there being no legal barrier to said marriage.
That she has not remarried since the death of the said deceased.

Included in the pension file are two statements from Reuben M. Brown. Reuben M. Brown’s wife, Mary Molly Crawford was the daughter of Jones A. Crawford and his first wife, Mary Fish. Mary Fish Crawford died in 1862 when Mary Mollie Crawford would have been 1 year old. In 1865, Jones A. Crawford married Amanda Wilson. While a step-mother, Amanda Wilson Crawford would have been the ‘mother’ to Mary Molly Crawford Brown. Reuben Brown’s statements in the pension file of Adline Crawford confirm the death of Amanda Wilson Crawford.

While research continues on the family of Jones A. Crawford, the pension file has added helped document the various wives and their children.
