AI Newspaper Hints

Did you attend RootsTech 2024 in person OR virtually? If so, you are likely aware that many of the genealogy sites revealed new AI generated tools. One of those announcements was Ancestry’s new newspaper search. (See my Ancestry Newspapers post)

While this site allows searching these newspapers, they are also showing up as Ancestry hints. While researching the family of Jacob Black, I encountered one of those hints that identifies many of his children.

“Notice in Partition,” The Greenville Journal (Greenville, Ohio), 20 June 1866, page 4; digital images, Newspapers.com (www.newspapers.com : viewed online 18 March 2024).

On the FamilySearch site, the Jacob Black [LZXB-W85] family included Lydia, Adeline, Thomas, Jesse, Samuel and Susan. The family also lists a Mary A. Black [LWNH-WBD]. This Mary Black is shown as having died in 1869 and has a husband named George Sebring.

The Find a Grave record for Jacob Black includes links to Find a Grave sites for 3 children: Mary Black Reed, Lydia Black Fourman and Adaline E. Pyles. The record for Mary A. Black Reed includes links to her husband, John Reed and their children: Milton, Nancy, Sarah, William and Levi. This Find a Grave record also indicates Mary A Black Reed died in 1889. Mary Black Reed is shown as the daughter of Frederick Black and Catherine Black on FamilySearch.

Based on the newspaper article, I

  • added Jacob and Sarah (Crawford) Black as parents for Mary Black Reed
  • uploaded an image of the newspaper article to Jacob Black and the children I’ve been able to identify – including Mary Black Reed
  • added a source for the newspaper article to the profiles of Jacob Black and the identified children including Mary Black Reed
  • Added a note to Jacob Black seeking information about the additional names: Samuel, Perry, Martha and Charles
  • Added a note to Mary A Black about the possiblity that she was connected to the wrong parents

It is highly likely that I would have never found this ‘notice to partition’ article without Ancestry’s new AI indexing of the newspapers. Thank you Ancestry for these additional resources!
