Sabethans Get Letters
From the War Zone

Mrs. Mary Thomas, formerly of Fairview and Hiawatha but who is
now taking care of Mrs Mary Hennigh in Sabetha, corresponds regularly with relatives in South Wales. Especially interesting does she consider letters from her niece and nephew, Zena and Archie Davies. Zena, 15, recently gave up high school in order to give more of her time to doing work connected with the war mostly aid to evacuees, from London and other metropolitan areas. Archie is 13 and is attending high school. Zena also corresponds with Patsy Rench, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. G. Rench of Sabetha. The Davies children write from Derry Cottage, Whitland, Carm-Shire, South Wales, England.

Mrs Thomas considers one of the most interesting bits of news Zena has written lately is that telling of having seen an American “Flying Fortress” bomber fly over their locality. THe letter was written in early December. She says the giant American bomber was “the hugest thing you ever saw. Mammy and I were in the field and it seemed to fill the sky We were delighted, as we would like to see Berlin after one night’s bombing with these. We’re going to have a topping new year. watching old Musso on the run We have not much shortage of anything. We only hate rations

“in case”. Eggs are worst, until winter is over. The post offices have a lot to do now because there are so many ‘people’ spending Christmas away from home. I think the Greeks are the best fighters in the world. Happy New Year to you, and also Patsy Rench.”
Archie writes. “It is getting near Christmas once again This year has seemed to go faster than ever. We get a bit of activity around here now. There are crowds of searchlights about here and a lot more further down, also anti-aircraft batteries, which are pretty efficient. They have blown about half a dozen Jeries to little pieces. One night about 30 Jerries passed over us. It’s not many considering the number that has bombed other big-towns but they made a heck of a noise. We are posting, earlier this year as letters take time to reach their destination.
The children enclosed a Christmas card made by themselves. Zena writes “We are all making our own Christmas cards now as it not only, saves paper but also saves money with which we can buy savings stamps. All evacuees are doing it.
