As always, Randy Seaver of Genea-Musings comes up with a good challenge for his Saturday Night Genealogy Fun blog. As fellow genea blogger, Linda Stufflebeam pointed out in her Saturday Night Genealogy Fun Blog, this new tool from Family Search has the potential to chip away at brick walls!
While I haven’t made any progress on my own ‘brick walls’, I’m finding information that will chip away and likely poke some major holes in Bashford and Ellis brick walls. When I searched the labs for the Crawford surname and limited it to Lincoln County, Kentucky, I discovered several deeds that I’d never seen before pertaining to John Crawford. Since John Crawford was not the seller or purchaser of the land, the deeds were not listed in the indexes under his name. Without the ability to search every word of the deeds, these deeds would have stayed buried in Lincoln County records. Since the Bashford and Ellis families did not live in Lincoln county, Kentucky at the time (and may never have lived there), it is unlikely that they would find these deeds. And these deeds identify descenants of John Crawford with the surnames of Ellis and Bashford. One of the Crawford – Ellis deeds has been shared on this site. More of my findings will be posted in the coming weeks.
Having done quite a bit of deed research throughout my tree, I elected to work with someone for whom I haven’t done this research. Thus, I searched the labs for my 4th great grandfather, Aaron Hutchinson. I then narrowed my results down to New York.
Next, I scanned the results for any items also mentioning Hannah as wife. Yes, I could have structured a search to do that, but I chose to visually scan the list instead. The first item listed in my results referencing Hannah was the probate of the will. I had already found the will in an Ancestry database, New York, Wills and Probate Records, 1659-1999. However the documents in this database have not been transcribed. Thanks to the labs I will be able to get the transcription of the multiple pages related to his will.
Continuing to scan the results, I found a deed where my 3rd great grandfather signs a quit claim deed to New York land giving it to his brother Holom Hutchinson.

County line to the East Side of the Highway , thence on a line so far South of East as to meet
a point on the East line of said lot one chain & Eighty seven & a half links South of the
County line , thence South along the East line of said lot to the place of beginning , Also all
that certain tract of land Situate in the said town of Caledonia bounded as follows Viz . Beginning
at the North East corner of land owned by Orren Densmone thence North eighty seven degrees thirty]
minutes West twenty one chains & Eighty Eight links to land owned by John Dickinson thence
North two degrees thirty minutes East thirty two chains to the North side of the highway , thence
South Eighty seven degrees & thirty minutes East twenty one chains Eighty Eight links to the
road leading from the State road to Halls Mills , thence South two degrees & thirty minutes west ,
along the west side of said road thirty two chains to the place of beginning the two parcels con
taining two hundred fifty two acres of land be the same more or less & all my right claim &
title to the personal Estate of my Father Aaron Hutchinson deceased Together with all and Singular
the hereditaments and appurtenances thereunto belonging or in any wise appertaining and the reversion
and reversions remainder and remainders rents issues and profits thereof and all the estate right title
interest claim and demand whatsoever of the said party of the first part either in law or equity of in
and to the above bargained premises with the said hereditaments and appurtenances To have and
to hold the said premises above described to the said party of the second part his heirs and assigns
to the sole and only proper use benefit and behoof of the said party of the second part his heirs

Finding my guy listed in a probate file was what led to my brick wall hole. He was the largest creditor owed money from an estate. Building out the FAN club from this new person – a surname I haven’t ever come across – is what brought down the brick wall. Thank you for the shout out.
