Another Ellis Deed

Have you used deeds to identify heirs? The FamilySearch labs feature is uncovering quite a few deeds where John Crawford is mentioned in the deed. Several of these deeds claim to identify his heirs. This 1848 deed is similar to the first one posted. The difference is that it provides a husband’s name and 1848 locations.

Know all men by these presents that we Rebecca Ellis & Esther
Ellis of the Borough of Mercersburg , County of Franklin and State
of Pennsylvania and Moses McCoy & Rhunnah McCoy his wife &
Frederick Sponsler & Harriett Sponsler his wife , formerly Rhuanah & Harriett
Ellis of Washington County State of Maryland , do hereby
nominate constitute and appoint Eli D. Bashford and John McCoy
of the County of Morrow and State of Ohio our attorneys in fact
to demand , sue for recover , and receive of the Administrator of
John Crawford deceased late of Lincoln County and State of Ken
tucky , any money that may be due owing or coming to us
as heirs at law of the said John Crawford – We do hereby author
ize our said Attorneys to institute suits in any of the Coun – ty in the State of Kentucky for the recovers of lands or
money , which they may consider due , owing or coming to
us as heirs of the said Crawford , and we do further authorize
our said attorneys to make compromise of suits or claims
if they should think best & proper so to do , and sell the
same & make conveyances — Giving & granting to our said
Attorneys by these presents our full & whole power , strength
& authority , in and about the premises , to have use & take
all lawful ways & means , in our names , for the purposes aforesaid
and upon the receipt of any such sum or sums of money due
to us as heirs of said Crawford , acquittances or other sufficient
discharges , for us & in our names , to make seal and deliver –
And in general , all & every other act or acts , thing or things ,
device and devices in the Law whatsoever , needful & necessary
to be done , in and about the premises , for us and in our names
to do , execute and perform as fully largely & amply to all intents
and purposes , as we ourselves might or could do if person
ally present . And attorneys one or more under them for

the purposes aforesaid , to make & constitute and again at
pleasure to revoke . Hereby ratifying , allowing & holding
for form and effectual all and whatsoever our said Attorneys
shall lawfully do in & about the premises by virtue hereof .

Be it known that on the 25th day of November
A.D. 1848 , before me Robert King one of the Justices of the Peace , in
& for said County of Franklin came the above named Rebecca
Ellis & Esther Ellis and acknowledged the above written Letter
of Attorney to be their act and deed and desired that the same
might be recorded as such according to Law .
In testimony whereof , I have hereunto set my
hand & seal this day & year above written .

Maryland Washington County Sct :
Be it remembered that on this 27th day of November , in the year
of our Lord One thousand eight hundred & forty eight , before me David E. Price
one of the Justices of the Peace of the State of Maryland in & for Washing
ton County aforesaid , personally appeared Moses McCoy and
Rhuanah McCoy , whose names appear as parties to the aforegoing
Power of Attorney and did each and severally acknowledge their
singing sealing and delivering the same to be their respective act and deeds
In testimony whereof I hereunto set my hand and seal the day

each and severally acknowledge their signing sealing and delivering
the same to be their respective acts and deeds

I , James Wright Prothonotary of the Court of
Common Pleas of said County do hereby certify that Robert King Esqr
by & before whom the foregoing acknowledgments of Rebecca Ellis and
Esther Ellis purports to have been taken is & was at the time of
so doing an acting Justice of the Peace in and for said County duly
commissioned & qualified according to Law , and that the signature
subscribed thereto purporting to be his is genuine .
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand
& affixed the seal of the said Court at Chambersburg
the sixth day of Dec. A.D. One thousand eight hundred forty eight

I hereby certify that Jonathan Hower Esq , before whom the
foregoing acknowledgment was made , and who hath hereunto sub
scribed his name , was at the time of so doing one of the Justices

affix the seal of Washington County Court , this 29 ” day of
November 1848 .

Commonwealth of Kentucky Lincoln County To wit :
I Champe Carter Clerk of the County Court for the County aforesaid
do certify that this Power of Attorney from Rebecca Ellis & Esther
Ellis , Moses McCoy & Rhueanah McCoy his Wife , & Frederick Sponseller
and Harriet Sponseller his wife , formerly Rhueanah & Harriet Ellis
to Eli D. Bashford & John McCoy was produced to Thomas Helm
late Clerk of the Lincoln County Court , in his office with the
certificates thereon endorsed , as appears from an endorsement
thereon in these words , to wit : ” Moses McCoy & c to Bashford & c
Power of Att ” 1849 , July 3rd P. A. with certificate endorsed thereon recod
into office and admitted to record . Whereupon , the said Power of Attorney with
the certificate endorsed thereon , together with this certificate hath been duly admit
ted to record in my office . Given under my hand this 25th day
of June 1851.
