Have you thought about how web site design has changed over the years? I’m sure most people haven’t.
I’m going to show my age here and state that web sites used to be designed to fit the major content on a computer monitor. Thus, the pages were wider and short. Our reliance on cell phones has caused a change in those design concepts. Now it’s OK for a web site to require a visitor to scroll to view content. In some cases, the hosting platform can transition sites designed for the desktop into a site that works on our cell phones. Unfortunately that is not true in all cases.
While planning a trip to an area historical museum, I was looking at a variety of websites on my phone, including the site for the Nemaha County Historical Society. In the process, I discovered that Nemaha County Historical Society’s website was one of those sites that did not work well on a phone. Since it was created years ago, I’m sure the design was for a desktop monitor.
Since I am not the ‘webmaster’ for the site, I consulted with that volunteer about the issue. It was decided that I could work on the site to ‘fix’ the design issue. Unfortunately, in the process of updating the software, I BROKE the site. The original theme no longer displays correctly even on a desktop computer.
Thus, I had to switch the theme for the site. With the new theme, I was able to easily move the content into a format that works for both a desktop monitor and a mobile device.

On a mobile device, on scrolls thru the content with the buttons at the bottom.

While I was working on the Nemaha County Historical Society’s site, I discovered a problem with my site. If I use the Safari app on my iPhone, everything works correctly. However, when I use the Chrome app, the menus will not open. Now that I have the historical society site working, I need to work on my own. Hopefully, it won’t require a theme change!
