Today is National Purple Heart Day.
A year ago, I heard the morning DJ announce that ‘today is Purple Heart Day’. As a volunteer for the Nemaha County Historical Society, my first thought was to find the list of Nemaha County residents who had received a Purple Heart and share it on Facebook. Unfortunately, I could not find a master list of Purple Heart receipients or even a specific list for Nemaha county.
This marked the beginning of my year-long quest to compile a comprehensive list of Purple Heart recipients from Nemaha County, Kansas. Using various resources, including self-reporting, I have assembled a list that is still likely incomplete. This list is now available on the Nemaha County Historical Society’s Purple Heart page.

Recently, I learned about the National Purple Heart Trail sponsored by the Military Order of the Purple Heart. I am hopeful that tonight, the Seneca City Council will proclaim Seneca, Kansas as a Purple Heart City.
