Mentzer Marriages
Have you ever found handwritten notes about family marriages in your files and wondered how to use them to track down the original documents?
Today’s discovery comes from notes likely taken during a visit to Yates Center and the Woodson County Courthouse. These notes pertain to the marriage of Henry Mentzer.
Knowing that FamilySearch has digitized many county records, I searched their site to see what was available for Woodson County, Kansas. While not all of the county’s marriage records have been digitized, they have been indexed, making it easier to locate the relevant information.
For instance, I quickly found the 1903 marriage record for Henry Mentzer, which included the original image of the document.
These handwritten notes guided me to both the original marriage license for Henry, showcasing the value of even the smallest genealogical clues.
That’s very cool. So far for me, though, the only hand written note I have is from my Polish grandmother, who sketched out a very brief family tree and didn’t even include the wives’ names (which struck me as odd, as she was a strong woman who always encouraged my sister and me in anything we did, traditional or not)…
