ENROLL ‘TWENTY-ONES’
Board to Shuffle Their Cards for Serial Numbers July 9
SIGN WITH UNCLE SAM
The “Twenty-Ones,” young men who have reached their majority since the first selective service registration October 16, were signing yesterday with Uncle Sam. The local board registered 87 men, several of these from points outside the county, whose cards will be transferred.
All the “Twenty-Ones” registered on what the service regulations call “melon” cards. The regulation said this attempt was the colored cards orange or salmon or pink. They are merely termed “melon.”
The men who registered last October 16 did so on white cards. There are a few cases of in-between. Such is the man in the national guard at the time and whose enlistment expired since. Such a case was that of Douglas P. Dunn, Sabetha. He registered yesterday for the first time. Since he is not a “Twenty-One,” he was given the official card, white. He will be numbered with the first registration group, with a serial number following the last man on the October list. His order number will fall according to the first national drawing.
It is technical but it serves to clear the record for the “Twenty-Ones,” those who registered on the melon cards.
The local board is directed to meet Sub-district 8 next Wednesday to shuffle the melon cards. Numbering will start with 1, but each number will be prefixed by an “M” further to indicate the second registration.
The local board does not yet know when information on these men will be inducted into service. There may be a new national drawing. The morning papers state that all men who reached their 28th birthday are automatically placed in deferred classification.

Love the logic of referring to orange/salmon/pink as “melon”. That’s pretty cool. Unlike the selective service. Is one of these men your relative?
Even though I’m on the board for the Nemaha County Historical Society, I don’t have family roots in Nemaha County. Thus, none of these men are my relatives. The historical society has a fantastic military museum and I have been dedicating some of my posts to the military history of the county. Thanks to the libraries who digitized the newspapers, that research is fairly simple. http://nemahacountyhistoricalsociety.com/military-temple-of-honor
