DEFER MEN OVER 28
Board Has New Regulations on Men Recently Married
There are several items of news interest from the Nemaha County selective service office. Foremost is that nine men are called to report at Seneca at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday of next week, the 16th, for induction at Ft. Leavenworth.
These are the men on the list:
- Henry Aloysius Holthaus, Seneca;
- John Alfred Barrett, Wetmore;
- Raphael Leo Dalsing, Seneca.
- William Baxter Stanton, Centralia;
- Albert John Boeckman, Goff;
- Joseph Clement Huninghake, Seneca;
- Kenneth LeRoy Gernand, Goff, now at Washington, D.C.;
- Wilfred Bernard Kramer, Seneca;
- Lester Eugene Noble, Oneida;
The call was originally for 12 men. However, three men who were past 28 and men 28 and past are being deferred at the present time pending congressional action, which is expected to defer such men permanently. The three who would have gone are Frank Callahan of Wetmore, Chas. McMahon of Bancroft and Samuel Robbins, employed at the Paramount Cleaners, Seneca.
The deferment of men past 28 came too close to the July call for the board to give proper length of notice to other men to take their places.
Must Make Statement
Men who are married after they register, or acquire other dependents which they feel entitle them to deferment, must now submit a written statement before they are placed in deferred class, according to advice from state headquarters at Topeka. This history of the case must show the dependent was acquired in the “normal course of human affairs,” before the board makes deferment. If the registrant or his dependent does not submit such a statement, the board is to give the registrant 10 days’ notice for its need before giving the man his final classification.
The board had a long letter regarding dependency. Boiled down, a registrant is entitled to classification as No. 3A if he has one or more dependents, dependent on him for support, in a reasonable manner. Maintenance of the family is important to the national well-being. Newly married men are entitled to the same treatment from Uncle Sam as those married longer. No registrant is entitled to deferment, however, if he requires a dependent for the purpose of escaping the service. Hence, the local board is to take the statements and allow deferment only where justified.
The letter indicates men are wanted who can be kept in the army for the year after their induction. Some whose wives were working, not dependent, were taken into the service, only to find wives lost their jobs, increase of the family is expected, similar circumstances; now the men ask release.
It is noted it is not necessary to put a man in class 1A if the wife contributes to support of the home. The husband in such case might also be contributing to her support.
R.M. Emery, Jr., is government appeal agent, checks against classification made by the local board and can also advise registrants on matters of appeal.
Bulletin Board at Office
The Selective Service board, which did have its bulletin board at the City Hall, now posts information of interest to registrants on its bulletin board in its office opposite the City Hall.
