My Favorite Photo

#52Ancestors

One of my favorite photos is from Christmas 1953. At just a toddler, it was likely the first Christmas where I could actively participate. Yet, it was a season marked by profound sadness for my family.

On December 23rd, my mother gave birth to twin boys. Tragically, Duane Gail Crawford, one of the twins, passed away on Christmas Eve and was laid to rest on December 26th.

What amazes me most is how, in the midst of their heartbreak, my family still found the strength to create and preserve memories. They took the time to capture moments from that Christmas in photographs, ensuring that even during sorrowful times, joy and love were not forgotten.

One of those cherished pictures is of me with my grandmother, Winnie (Currey) Crawford and Josie (Hammond) Crawford, my great-grandmother—a tender reminder of resilience, family, and the enduring power of love.

  1. The enduring power of love is what I think helped your entire family through that tragic time.
