Anna May Schoepflin Mentzer
Do you have prayer cards or funeral programs in your genealogy collection? I’m fortunate that both of my grandmothers preserved many family treasures, including funeral programs.
One such find is the funeral program for my grandmother’s aunt, Anna May Mentzer. Born Anna May Schoepflin, she was married to my great grand-uncle, Philip Embry Mentzer. Like most of my Mentzer relatives, they spent their entire lives in Woodson County, Kansas. Along with this funeral program, I also have a photocopy of her obituary from the Yates Center newspaper, which provides further details about her life and family.
I’m grateful to my grandmother for preserving this meaningful memento—a tangible link to our family’s history.
OBITUARY
MRS. PHILIP MENTZERAnnie May Schoepflin, youngest daughter of Martin and Christena Schoepflin, was born October 11, 1879, near Baldwin, Kansas. In her girlhood, she moved with her family to Woodson County, and on October 25, 1905, she was married to Phillip Mentzer of Yates Center.
To this couple were born four children: Howard of Eureka, Loren of Pando, Colo., Ivan of the home, and Edna Grace, who preceded her in death in 1911.
At an early age, she was converted and has always been a faithful church worker. At the time of her death, she was a member of the Turkey Creek Evangelical Church.
Mrs. Mentzer passed away September 27, 1942, after being ill several months. Besides her husband and her three sons, she leaves to mourn her death: two daughters-in-law, Mrs. Loren Mentzer and Mrs. Howard Mentzer; one granddaughter, Carol Lee; three sisters, Mrs. Mary Lutz of Baldwin; Mrs. Virgil Wingfield of Yates Center; and Mrs. Frank Rose of Chanute; three brothers, John Schoepflin of Kansas City, Ed Schoepflin of Chanute, and Jake Schoepflin of Baldwin.
Her parents and one brother, Will Schoepflin, preceded her in death.
The funeral service was held in the Yates Center Evangelical Church, Rev. E. F. Boehringer officiating, assisted by Rev. R. T. Schreiber.
Burial in the Yates Center Cemetery.
