Hampton L. Crandall

The Life of Hampton Lillibridge Crandall (1778–1863)

Hampton Lillibridge Crandall was born in 1778, either in Rhode Island or Connecticut. Little is known about his early years, but by the early 1800s, he had settled in Genesee County, New York, where he married Freelove Butler around 1805.

By 1810, Hampton was living in Caledonia, Genesee County, New York. During the War of 1812, he served in Adams’ Regiment of the New York Volunteers, demonstrating his commitment to his young country.

In the following years, Hampton continued to reside in Genesee County, as records show him there in July 1820. However, by May 2, 1826, he had moved westward, filing land entry papers for property in Seneca County, Ohio, marking the beginning of his presence in Ohio.

Over the next decade, he actively engaged in land transactions in Seneca County, buying and selling multiple parcels of land, often with Lewis Crandall, who may have been a relative. Some notable transactions included:

  • Selling 70 acres to Lewis Crandall in 1829 for $100.
  • Selling 90 acres to Lewis Crandall in 1833 for $600.
  • Repurchasing a portion of the same land from Lewis Crandall in 1835 for $600.
  • Selling the eastern half of his land to Alexander Campbell for $1,000 in 1836.

By 1840, Hampton was recorded as a resident of Tymochtee Township, Crawford County, Ohio. A few years later, he moved again, settling in McCutchenville, Wyandot County, Ohio, by 1845. He remained in Wyandot County through 1848, continuing to buy and sell land, including a $250 sale to Lewis Crandall that year.

By 1849, Hampton had relocated once more, this time to Washington Township, Van Buren County, Iowa. He spent his final years in Bentonsport, Van Buren County, Iowa, where he passed away on January 1, 1863, at the age of 85.

He was laid to rest at Mars Hill Cemetery in Keokuk Township, Wapello County, Iowa, closing the chapter on a long life marked by movement, landownership, and service to his country.
