RootsMagic 11 – GROUPS

When it comes to using new software, are you a diver or an evaluator? Do you sit back and check out all of the new features and how to use them before committing to an upgrade? Or, do you just dive in and start using the software and figure it out as you go?

When it comes to genealogy software, I’m a diver. I don’t want to take the time away from research to spend evaluating software. I also don’t want to take the chance that I might record a new source while in the evaluation stage just to lose it because I only recorded it in the ‘test’ database. Thus, I converted my RootsMagic 10 database to RootsMagic 11 immediately after installing the new version. As I use the newer version, most of the screens and processes are similar. However, the creation of a group based on ‘rules’ is slightly different.

I’m a big fan of color coding. I then create groups based on the colors. These groups allow me to select a portion of my file for tasks such as TreeShare.

The process to create a group based on color is one of the procedures that changed slightly from version 10 to version 11.

The first step is to add a group based on rules and give it a name.

This opens a window displaying the current rules for the group. Since there are none, I click on the plus sign to add a rule.

Next, I select a rule type. Since I want to create a group based on the color code, I selected ‘Individual attributes”.

Next, I select the desried color ant the set. Since I use several different sets of colors, I assumed that while my sets were named, they appeared in the list in their numerical order.

After clicking OK, the screen displays the number of people added to the group. Clicking SAVE assgns these selected individuals to the group.

As I assign the color to additional people, I can simply use the REFRESH PEOPLE button to add them to the group.
