Gladys Olive (Mentzer) Green (1894–1977)
Early Life and Family
Gladys Olive Mentzer was born on July 9, 1894, in Woodson County, Kansas, to Charles Oliver Mentzer and Nettie Adell (Wells) Mentzer. She grew up in a close-knit Kansas family that valued education and community.

The 1895 Kansas census listed two-year-old “Bab Mentzer” living with her parents in Woodson County. A few years later, the 1900 census shows five-year-old “Gladys Mentzur” with her family in the same area. By 1905, the Mentzers were still in Neosho Falls, and Gladys was a ten-year-old schoolgirl. In 1910, the family was in Liberty Township, Coffey County, where fifteen-year-old Gladys was already thinking about becoming a teacher.
Education and Teaching Career
Education shaped much of Gladys’s life. By age twenty, she was already teaching, as shown in the 1915 Kansas census. That same year she attended Missouri Christian College in Camden Point, Missouri. Later, she studied at the Kansas State Normal School in Emporia, earning a lifetime teaching certificate in 1918.
Her early adult years were a mix of teaching and study, and she spent decades in Kansas classrooms, teaching wherever her husband’s work took them.
Marriage and Family Life
On December 8, 1917, Gladys married Roy Vinton Green in Coffey County, Kansas. Roy was also a teacher and later became a superintendent of schools. Together, they shared a love of learning and a devotion to education that marked both their careers.

The couple raised three sons:
- Loris Eugene Green, born May 28, 1921, in Osage City, Kansas.
- Gerald Roy Green, born June 1, 1923, in Neosho Falls, Kansas.
- Kenneth Maurice Green, born August 23, 1927, in Phillipsburg, Kansas.

The family moved often as Roy accepted school positions across Kansas. In 1920, they lived in Neosho Falls; by 1925, they were in Phillipsburg; and in 1930, they were in Clyde, Cloud County, where Gladys taught in the city schools while raising three young sons.
Roy Vinton Green (1891–1951)
Roy was born August 16, 1891, in Colby, Thomas County, Kansas. Like Gladys, he attended Kansas State Normal School in Emporia, graduating in 1918 with a Bachelor of Science in Education. He later earned a master’s degree in education from the University of Kansas in 1928.
Roy served as a Private First Class in Company C, 353rd Infantry during World War I. Afterward, he built a respected career in education—first as a teacher, then as a superintendent in several Kansas towns. He passed away on November 26, 1951, in Le Roy, Coffey County, Kansas, and was buried in Le Roy Cemetery.
Gladys’s Later Years
After Roy’s death, Gladys continued to make her mark as both an educator and community member. She remained in Emporia, completing a Bachelor of Science in Education from the Kansas State Teachers College on May 22, 1954—a remarkable achievement for someone already long established in the profession.
She was active in professional organizations, serving as president of the retired teachers’ association in Emporia between 1968 and 1969. In October 1972, she published a book of poetry, reflecting her love of words and her thoughtful outlook on life.

Gladys spent her final years at Kansas Christian Home in Newton, where she passed away on June 2, 1977, at age 82. She was buried beside her husband in Le Roy Cemetery.
Legacy
Gladys Mentzer Green devoted her life to learning, family, and community. Across her eighty-two years, she taught generations of Kansas students, inspired fellow educators, and found time to express herself through poetry. Her story echoes the dedication of Kansas teachers who shaped both classrooms and communities—and her descendants can take pride in that lasting legacy.
