Biography of Leslie George Mentzer (1898–1988)
Early Life and Family
Leslie George Mentzer was born on August 23, 1898, in Woodson County, Kansas, the son of Charles Oliver Mentzer and Nettie Adell Wells.
He spent his early years in rural eastern Kansas. The 1900 U.S. Census lists him as a two-year-old living in North Township, Woodson County, with his parents. By 1910, the family had moved to Liberty Township, Coffey County, where Leslie attended the Rose Mound School (District No. 9) under teacher Robert Throckmorton in January 1915.

Education and Early Work
In the 1915 Kansas state census, sixteen-year-old Leslie was living with his family in Neosho Township, Coffey County. Like many young men of his generation, he registered for the World War I draft on September 12, 1918, in Neosho Falls. The following year’s census records show him still living with his parents and helping with the family farm in Everett Township, Woodson County.
Marriage and Family Life
On April 16, 1924, Leslie married Vesta Marie Danielson at the Methodist parsonage in Neosho Falls, with Rev. Hall officiating. A newspaper reported:
“Mr. Leslie Mentzer and Miss Vesta Danielson were united in marriage at the Methodist parsonage by Rev. Hall, Wednesday afternoon at 4:30 o’clock. The bride wore a lovely dress of gray georgette. They left immediately for Pittsburg, Kansas, on a short honeymoon. On their return they will be at their home west of town. Mr. and Mrs. Mentzer are well known in Neosho Falls and have a host of friends who join in wishing them a long journey together on life’s pathway.”
The couple settled near Neosho Falls and began raising their family.

Their children were:
- Lila Marie Mentzer, born January 31, 1925, in Woodson County, who later married Victor Bogacz on August 13, 1945, in Sharon Springs, Kansas.
- Norman Eugene Mentzer, born and died April 16, 1927, buried at Cedarvale Cemetery in Neosho Falls.
- William L. Mentzer, who married Marjorie Joan Hiser on October 28, 1951, in Iola, Kansas.
Community and Farming Life
By 1930, the Mentzers were living in Geneva Township, Allen County, where Leslie worked as a farmer. The couple’s home reflected the agricultural rhythm of Kansas life during the Great Depression.
In 1939, Leslie purchased farmland in Allen County, described in the records as “the NW ¼ of Section 2, Township 24, Range 17.” He continued to farm there through the 1940s and 1950s.
The 1940 census lists Leslie, age 41, living in Allen County with Vesta, their daughter Lila, and son William. He again registered for the military draft during World War II on February 16, 1942, in Neosho Falls.
Family Gatherings and Social Life
Leslie and Vesta’s 25th wedding anniversary was celebrated on April 17, 1949, with a large gathering of family and friends at their home in Iola:

“Sunday, April 17th Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Mentzer were very pleasantly surprised when 59 relatives and friends came in with well filled baskets to help celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. Their daughter Mrs. Bogacz made the beautifully decorated four-tier wedding cake with the usual miniature bride and groom.”
The newspaper listed dozens of relatives in attendance, including many Mentzer, Wells, and Green family members, reflecting their close community ties.
Leslie and Vesta were also mentioned in local papers for everyday milestones. In 1954, they were described as “the very proud owners of a T.V. set”—a symbol of changing times in small-town Kansas.
Throughout their lives, the Mentzers remained active members of the Neosho Falls United Methodist Church.
Later Years
In later decades, Leslie and Vesta continued living in Neosho Falls and Geneva Township. Leslie occasionally bought and sold parcels of farmland with family members, including his daughter and son.
He lived a long and steady life rooted in the same Kansas countryside where he was born. On April 19, 1988, Leslie passed away at Countryside Estates in Iola, aged 89.
His obituary in The Wichita Eagle read:
“Leslie G. Mentzer, 89, retired farmer, died Tuesday, April 19, 1988. Survivors: wife, Vesta; son, Bill of Iola; daughter, Lila Bogacz of Blue Springs, Mo.; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren. Memorial has been established with United Methodist Church.”
Funeral services were held at the Neosho Falls United Methodist Church, officiated by Rev. Gerald Pringle, followed by burial in Cedarvale Cemetery.
Vesta Marie (Danielson) Mentzer (1900–1993)
Vesta was born December 23, 1900, in Martland, Fillmore County, Nebraska. She grew up in Kansas and lived most of her life alongside Leslie in Allen and Woodson Counties.
After Leslie’s death, she continued to live in the area until her own passing on February 16, 1993, at the age of 92. She was laid to rest beside her husband at Cedarvale Cemetery in Neosho Falls.
Historical Context
Leslie George Mentzer’s life spanned a transformative period in American history. Born at the end of the 19th century, he witnessed the rise of automobiles, airplanes, and radio; lived through both World Wars and the Great Depression; and adapted to technological changes such as the introduction of television in rural Kansas.
As a lifelong farmer, Leslie experienced firsthand the challenges of the Dust Bowl years and the gradual modernization of agriculture through mechanization and improved infrastructure. His strong ties to the Neosho Falls community and his Methodist faith anchored him in the social fabric of small-town Kansas life—a world shaped by cooperation, hard work, and family gatherings.
