Calling All Genea-Musings Fans!
It’s Saturday Night again — time for some Genealogy Fun!
Hey boys and girls, it’s the day after Halloween, and that means it’s time for another round of Saturday Night Genealogy Fun!
Here’s your assignment, should you choose to accept it (and since you’re reading this, I’m guessing you do — cue the Mission Impossible music!):
1) Think about your most memorable Halloween. Was it from your childhood (candy, games, and school carnivals)? Your teenage years (tricks, pranks, or parties)? Or adulthood (perhaps chaperoning little goblins or attending a costume bash)?
While most people remember carving pumpkins or decorating porches, one of my strongest Halloween memories is of not having a pumpkin at all! For several years, the local high school students held a contest to see who could collect the most pumpkins—meaning porch pumpkins were likely to disappear if left unattended. When I did have one, I brought it inside every night to keep it safe.
Because Halloween coincided with the end of the fall sports season, it often found me at high school events. I can still remember sitting at football games, silently hoping our car wouldn’t get soaped while sitting in the parking lot.
But perhaps my most vivid Halloween memory is the year of the ice storm — watching our newly planted trees bend and break under the weight of a glistening layer of ice.
My memories may not center on costumes or trick-or-treating, but I do have a treasured photo of my brothers and me, dressed up for Halloween long ago.

Your mention of the ice storm made me remember that we always hoped for Indian summer weather on the 31st. Weather could be tricky at that time of year. I love your photo. My family never seemed to take Halloween photos.
