Memorial Day

This coming Monday is Memorial Day. While we may think of the day as the day when we decorate our ancestor’s graves, it origin was for a different purpose.

Today, the holiday is to honor all those who have died while serving their country. As part of that celebration, The American Legion and V.F.W. will be putting up flagpoles and flags in the Seneca City Cemetery and the Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery. The flags will be put up starting at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 24th, and taken down on Monday, May 27th at 5 p.m.

Memorial Day Tribute Services will be held by The American Legion & V.F.W. of Seneca at the following times and locations around the county.

  • 7:45 a.m. at Baileyville West Cemetery
  • 8:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart (Baileyville) Cemetery
  • 8:15 a.m. at St. Benedict – St. Marys Cemetery
  • 8:45 a.m. at Oneida Cemetery
  • 9:15 a.m. at Kelly-St. Bede Cemetery
  • 9:30 a.m. at Root Cemetery
  • 10:20 a.m. at Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery
  • 10:30 a.m. Cit of Seneca Cemetery
  • 11:00 a.m. at the Veteran’s Wall on the East side of Seneca
  • 11:30 a.m. at Frieden’s Church Cemetery

The Centralia American Legion will host the following Memorial Day Services:

  • 8:00 a.m. St. Patrict Prayer Service (Corning) – No Mass
  • 9:00 a.m. St. Patrick Cemetery (Corning)
  • 9:15 a.m. Corning City Cemetery
  • 9:30 a.m. America City Cemetery
  • 10:00 a.m. Coal Creek Cemetery
  • 10:30 a.m. Centralia City Cemetery

Sabetha Memorial POst 7285 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Sabetha American Legion Post 126 will host the following l Memorial Day Services:

  • 10:00 a.m Sabetha Cemetery
  • 11:15 a.m. Woodlawn Cemetery

Besides the Veteran’s Wall on the east side of Seneca (Some Gave All), there is a monument outside of the courthouse honoring World War I veterans. Those who died in service have a * by their name. On the East side of the Courthouse sign is a plaque honoring all from the county who died during World War I and World War II (War Memorial). To the east of the Sabetha city hall are plaques honoring veterans of the Sabetha area.
