Calling all Genea-Musings Fans:
It’s Saturday Night again –
Time for some more Genealogy Fun!!
Your mission, should you decide to accept it (cue the Mission Impossible! music) is to:
1) Learning about how to pursue genealogy and family history is a lifetime task. Once you’ve mastered one record type (census, church, certificates, probate, directories, immigration, etc), or one skill (family tree software program, record transcription, source citations, DNA matches, AI prompting, etc.), a new record, or skill, presents itself. With the constant advances in technology and knowledge, doing genealogy and family history well requires constant learning to do something new.
2) This week’s challenge is to tell us a new genealogy-related skill that you have, or are working on, developing. Tell us about your progress. Are you having fun?
Are you a WikiTree user? While I have a WikiTree account and have shared research on some of my ancestors, I find using WikiTree to share my research to be a challenge.
I can use RootsMagic’s TreeShare to easily update my tree on Ancestry. I can attach sources found on FamilySearch to a profile. However, I struggle with some aspects of WikiTree.
My current challenge is what to do with a family structure based on research in wills, deeds and court orders that is different from the family structure on WikiTree. This research began with a Crawford Family genealogy found in the book, Miami Valley Genealogies. Using this source, I used FamilySearch’s full text capabilitis to research James Crawford in Augusta county, Virginia.
That research helpmed me put together the descendants of James Crawford and his wife, Elizabeth.

While a descendancy report seems cut and dried, this one required analyzing multiple resources to draw conclusions about the relationships. Thus, I’m not sure how to update the profile for James Crawford on WikiTree. Below are some of my recent posts about this research:
Thus my ‘challenge’ isn’t something I’ve learned but something I need to learn.
While I applaud WikiTree for working to provide sources for facts, I don’t use it much because I don’t generally find it any more reliable than any other online trees. I haven’t ever tried to add sources to a profile. Can’t you just add each source to the person to whom it applies even though one source might be duplicated?
